Each year, the Association of Clinical Scientists will award up to three travel grants to young scientists (≤ age 45) to attend the Annual Meeting. All three travel grants are based on the quality of the submitted abstract. The Association’s Awards Committee reviews all the abstracts and determines the recipients of these awards. The most important of these grants is the Alexander Feldman Travel Grant which is awarded only to one Fellow or Associate Fellow of the Association each year. Two other travel grants may be awarded to either members or non-members as described below.
Alexander Feldman Travel Grant
Alexander Z. Feldman, MD, FACSc was a Fellow of the Association. He started his faculty position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in July 2021 in the Neuropathology Division of the Department of Pathology as a neuropathologist as well as a pediatric/perinatal pathologist. Alex became an Associate Fellow of the Association in 2018, and was appointed by then ACS President Robert Hardy to serve as the Chair of the Young Fellows Section (YFS) and was reappointed by the succeeding Presidents to serve in that role in 2019, 2020, and 2021. His talent was greatly appreciated at the Association’s Musicale, an important annual event. He was a “one and only kind,” who had a talent in both music and clinical science in combination of neuropathology and pediatric pathology. The Alexander Feldman Travel Grant is awarded in honor of Dr. Feldman’s contributions to the Association on behalf of young clinical scientists.
The Alexander Feldman Travel Grant is awarded based on the quality of the submitted abstract for an Annual Meeting. The recipient must be a Fellow or Associate Fellow of the Association, age 45 or under. The award enables the recipient to attend the Annual Meeting to which he/she submitted the abstract. The travel grant consists of $2000 that can be used to pay for travel, expenses, and registration to attend the meeting.
Additional Travel Grants
Up to two additional travel grants may also be awarded (one in each of the two categories described below) to individuals, age 45 or under, based on the quality of their submitted abstract. Association membership is not a requirement. Each travel grant consists of $2000 that can be used to pay for travel, expenses, and registration to attend the Annual Meeting for which the abstract was submitted. Complimentary membership as an Associate Fellow, starting at the meeting at which the Travel Grant is awarded and continuing through the subsequent year, is also included, if the recipient was not already a member.
Young Investigators
This program is designed to encourage young investigators to consider a career in academic clinical laboratory science or pathology. Residents, fellows, and students in a doctoral program in health sciences, participating in research with a member of ACS, or sponsored by an ACS member are eligible. Students in programs leading to non-doctoral degrees conducting research with an ACS member may be considered upon written request from the ACS sponsor to the chair of the Young Investigator Awards Program. The award winner will be recognized at the Annual Banquet and give a podium presentation.
Early Career Professional in Pathology or Clinical Sciences
This program is designed to encourage professionals early in their career to attend our annual meeting, share their research, and network with our senior membership. Clinical scientists or pathologists within the first five years of practice, subsequent to their training, are eligible for this award. The award winner will be recognized at the Annual Banquet and give a podium presentation.
